Day 1 – Psycho – 31 Days Of Horror 2023 (Mini Review)

Day: 1

Film: Psycho

Type: Classic

Country: USA

Year: 1960

Kenny: 6.3 / 10

The first half had really good character development and dialogue. Had a bit of a lull in the second half, but the twist and how they tidied it up at the end was satisfying enough. For an older movie, watching for the first time 60 years later, it surprisingly holds up! Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates) character was chilling at points – even without the cheap thrills horror movies use today, it still has a few gasp moments.

Christine: 6.8 / 10

Full disclosure – I’m not normally a fan of black & white movies, but considering this is over 60 years old and not full of the SFX / jump scares / modern day creepiness that I normally love – this was still pretty good! The build up was well done and the twist worked well (even though I’ve seen all seasons of the Bates Motel TV show and so had to block that pre-knowledge out!). Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates) is brilliantly creepy, and Janet Leigh (Marion Crane) is a great female lead – the iconic shower scene still holds up in 2023. Also, didn’t know she was Jamie Lee Curtis’s mum, clearly horror movies run in the family!
