Day 3 – Men – 31 Days Of Horror 2023 (Mini Review)

Day: 3

Film: Men

Type: Folk

Country: UK

Year: 2022

Christine: 3.4 / 10

Well this movie is…. something. Harper (Jessie Buckley) takes a break in a rural countryside town after a tragedy, where all the men are Rory Kinnear (great actor, and probably the only thing worthwhile in this film). The first half is depressingly slow, absolutely nothing interesting happens, there is barely any character/plot development other than her wandering about in some woods – snoooooze. There are barely any interactions with other characters, and the few that do appear, are brief & fleeting. Then, a bloke with his knob out turns up in the garden, and things start to get weird. The last 30 minutes are an LSD fever dream that comes out of nowhere & doesn’t match the rest of the tone of the movie AT ALL. The themes of rebirth/generational trauma/abuse/toxic masculinity are prevalent throughout (especially during the bizarre finale) but it tries way too hard to be arty & abstract rather than weaving that into the storyline better in the first place.

Kenny: 3.6 / 10

Don’t waste your time! This one isn’t scary, or interesting in the slightest. It’s such a slow paced movie – the first hour you are sat desperate for something to grip you & reel you in but it never comes. The second half of the movie tries to be creepy but it’s just plain weird. You know a horror misses the mark when your phone has your attention more than the screen. That is, until the 20 minutes gets so weird you need to make sure your brownies weren’t spiked, so you have to watch just to make sure you’re seeing things right. Heavy pass.
