South Korea always has great horror / action movies – Train to Busan notably being one of the (if not, the best) zombie movie of all time. Not normally into monster movies, but this one sounded intriguing and we wanted to mix it up abit. This starts out really strong, with the monster causing havoc and terrorising civilians along the way. This really didn’t need to be two hours long though – the first half was easily a high a 7, but the second half was in the 4s. The lull in the middle of the movie drags out and it’s tough to get the momentum back especially when nothing new or different is introduced. Shame as this could have been a really great one.

The Host starts out absolutely fantastically. Some chemicals are unsafely poured down the drain and in time, a monster is born, residing in the sewers of Seoul’s Han River. The effects are actually pretty good, and the introduction is fast-paced, thrilling and reels you in straight away. There’s a lot of political undertones which initially help to strengthen the film, but in the second half – everything gets really weak and watered down. The action dies out, lots of the scenes feel played out and repetitive and even the monster gives up and disappears for a bit! If this film was 1.5 hours long it would work a lot better, with the extra 30 minutes easily chopped out to make the pace work better.
