Day 18 – Cobweb – 31 Days Of Horror 2023 (Mini Review)

Day: 18

Film: Cobweb

Type: Mystery

Country: USA

Year: 2023

Kenny: 7.3 / 10

Peter, a shy young boy without many friends is being bullied at school. During the night, he starts hearing strange knocking noises in the wall and whispers in his bedroom. He tells his parents, who quickly dismiss it as his wild imagination. A great part of this movie, is second guessing what was going to happen and trying to figure out his parents intentions – was Peter hearing something? Was he going mad? Were his parents abusive? The unknown of whether it was something sinister or not was gripping. Had a really good pace, and didn’t dip at any point. Would definitely recommend this one.

Christine: 8.2 / 10

Loved this one! There is a lot of ambiguity behind the characters and where the storyline was going. Peters parents (Lizzy Caplan & Antony Starr) were the perfect casting choice – amplifying the creepiness as the narrative played out. I liked that there were multiple avenues as to where the story could go – the parents, him, the bullies, his sister, having the wide variety of possible narratives kept the suspense high. The camera angles are fantastic – really building on the unease & uncomfortable nature the script initiates. Personally, I would preferred less SFX in the second half of the movie to keep it a bit more realistic, but it still worked well and although the end is abrupt, its brilliantly creepy. There was almost hints of Babadook in the filming style, and I loved that it didn’t really fit into a ‘type’ of horror – it was a mix of a whole lot without being confused or too full on.
