Struggled to get into Pulse – slightly unfair, because I think had I watched this in 2001 when it was released, it would probably have had a much bigger impact than it did today, but it felt quite outdated and didn’t really translate well to the modern day! It was also a bit too much of a slow burn, not enough happened considering it was 2 hours long, and there were a few points it dragged a little bit. The beginning was much stronger than the middle and end, they built up the creepy factor really well initially, but it lost steam, felt like it tried too hard to squeeze in the social commentary and in doing so, abandoned the horror fator a little too much!
Kenny: 4.6 / 10
Normally older horror films don’t feel that outdated (other than the SFX), but this one felt a lot older than it was! The pacing is really slow – the horror elements are mainly a few creepy shadows and images, but doesn’t push out the boat much further than that. There were no real moments of suspense – all of the cards were laid out quite early on, without much of a pay off and the character development was quite thin and unestablished. Overall, maybe I would have liked this 20 years ago – but doesn’t stand the test of time against modern horrors.
