Brilliantly Ridiculous

4.5 / 5

What do Dale Winton, Jeff Bezos and Gary Oldman all have in common? They, amongst other bizarrely funny additions, are all characters in Brave Mirror Production’s brilliantly ridiculous sketch show.

Finn Lanchester is the shows narrator – not usually found in a comedy show, but a welcome addition in ‘Attention Span’, as he humorously introduces each sketch with his Kindle and keeps the polished chaos ticking along. On the surface, each sketch written by Joseph Hollas, is completely random, with a quirky improvisational feel to each of them, but they’re actually all wonderfully prepared and cleverly connected, leaning into the faux-scrappiness as part of the humour. A theme of being easily distracted and tech-obsessed is present in most of the sketches, whether it’s Joe Deighton’s hilarious depiction of a phone being put on do not disturb, Daniel Golding’s inability to study, or Tallula White and Danielle De Vrie’s excellently funny battle at Amazon – the sketches are well put together and fantastically performed.

Utilising both wit and physical comedy, the talented five (Tallula White, Joe Deighton, Danielle De Vries, Finn Lanchester, Daniel Golding) are all experts with comedic timing and delivery, ensuring that the punny sketches don’t go to waste. The cast riff off each other well, no-one trying to steal the spotlight or struggling to keep up – they have great chemistry and seem to really enjoy the show that they are performing together.

The show utilises low-budget props as part of their sketches – cardboard cut outs of anything and everything, creatively adding an extra layer of well-prepared silliness to the performance. Three TV’s at the back of the stage are also incorporated, mostly just with a single picture to provide a location signifier for each scene, but also occasionally utilising pre-recorded videos such as the ‘Love Island’ ice cream promo and ‘Apprentice’ taxi interview that have the audience roaring with laughter.

This is a great show, performed by a wonderful group of talented comedians – you definitely won’t have a short attention span watching this funny, fast-paced comedy gem.
