Fantastically Festive

4.5 / 5

The gorgeous Brick Lane Music Hall is home to The Magic of Christmas – a fantastically festive show combining music, comedy and Christmas spirit in abundance.

Hosting the evening is the Brick Lane Music Hall founder Vincent Hayes, his cheeky charm and charismatic camaraderie an immediate hit with the audience. His very funny, and at times brilliantly risquΓ© humour pokes fun at the audience while never offending, and it’s clear to see his passion and enthusiasm for everyone involved in the show, as well as the Venue itself. The warmth and community-led atmosphere is abundant throughout, from the simple, but very appreciated section thanking the Kitchen and FOH staff, to the acknowledgment of the variety of outreach programmes and performances offered both in and out of the venue. These little touches make you feel part of their well-crafted community, whether it’s your first or fiftieth time visiting!

Each show ticket includes a dining option which differs between dinner, lunch and afternoon tea depending on the time booked. We were treated to a delicious Christmas lunch which was filling, hearty and very tasty. Starter was a delicious tomato soup, main was turkey with all the trimmings, and dessert was a slice of Christmas pudding heaped in custard. A classic Christmas lunch, well prepared, with very generous portion sizes! It’s a nice touch having the meal served in full prior to the show rather than in various intervals as it helps the focus fully remain on the show when it begins later in the afternoon, and gives you time to enjoy the food, without any rushing around.

The show itself is brilliantly enjoyable with plenty of variety and talent from the wonderful performers involved. Andrew Robley rouses the audience with a sing along to some classic older songs such as ‘Daydream Believer’ and ‘Daisy Bell’, while also performing a variety of Christmas classics and comedy skits with Hayes. Violinist Victoria Yellop elegantly dazzles with her musical medley – with ‘Auld Lang Syne’ being another moment where the audience is brought together in collective unison. Although Christmas is obviously the focal point for much of the music, there is also a section with classic film songs, and a country music assortment on offer as well – all performed by the wonderful collection of singers; Joe Payne, Samantha McNeil, Charlotte Fage, Lucy Reed, Jake Lawrence and Andrew Robley, alongside the brilliant band led by Scott Hayes. Vincent Hayes is present throughout, whether it’s his funny comedy segments or simply introducing the acts, he remains in control and ensures a well-flowing production.

Wholesome, traditional and full of heart, The Magic of Christmas embodies Christmas spirit at it’s finest. Community collaboration, hearty food and a joyously warm atmosphere that leaves you with a beaming smile on your face.
