Em is fed up of swiping, dating, being ghosted and having her heart broken. Her days are spent analysing messages, timing her replies and crafting the perfect responses alongside her ChatGPT romantic assistant.
After an evening of spiralling over her ex, ChatGPT (Alex McCarragher) has decided enough is enough – and Em (Evangeline Beaven) is need of ‘ A Christmas Carol’ style intervention, presenting her with three previous matches to figure out where she’s going wrong. Her matches under scrutiny consist of Elliot (Andrew Friedman), a crypto bro who was keen to get to know her, Tom (Frankie Wade) the classic fuckboy who love-bombed her then changed his mind, and finally Adam (Jude Alp) the philosophical poet who lacked any real connection. Despite their obvious red flags, Em was hooked – relying on ChatGPT to progress each relationship further, but now the tables have turned and Em has to take a good hard look at her dating patterns.
Hognoni’s clever, funny script blends elements of Black Mirror and A Christmas Carol into this enjoyable, relatable rom-com. Beaven is a likeable lead, her exasperation on the quest for romance well portrayed, never making her too over the top, but ensuring the ridiculousness of the situation with her new ‘Romantic Accountability Avatars’ is clearly explored. McCarragher is exceptional as the robotic, infuriating AI assistant – his delayed response times, constantly agreeable replies and an occasional dose of affiliate marketing, it’s a fantastic depiction of the tool people have come to depend on. Friedman’s finance bro persona is spot on and very funny, Alp delivers deliberate cringe with perfection and Wade shows the shift in Tom’s emotions with ease.
The talented cast balance humour and social commentary very well, the warnings of AI and the role of technology in our lives woven cleverly into the script without ever feeling too heavy or preachy. Running at only 40 minutes long, it’s a short show, but packed with timely, sharp ideas.
