Brilliantly Likeable

4 / 5

Mark is in his 30s – giving another speech at what feels like his 50th wedding this Summer. All around him, his friends are celebrating their matrimony, while he’s stressing about his perpetual singledom, and wondering when it’ll be his turn to tie the knot.

Mark’s (Daragh Cushen) happy for his friends, but he can’t escape the frustration around the endless weekends spent making small talk, annual leave never being spent on holidays he wants to take, and the extortionate costs surrounding travel, gifts and not so open bars, made even worse with the “single tax” that plagues his bank account. He’s been out of he dating scene for a while now, but is it time to bite the bullet and jump back on the apps?

Cushen is a brilliantly likeable performer, his personable, naturally comedic energy, immediately getting the audience on side. We’re first introduced to his well-written character during his opening wedding speech, and the rest of the performance alternates between snippets of speeches delivered at various weddings, complete with tongue-in-cheek guidance on how to make them successful, and his ongoing reflections on how his life is progressing. From humorous depictions of dodgy dates and three day hangovers to more poignant moments of worry and internal reflection, the show strikes an enjoyable balance. It’s a relatable experience for many, which heightens both the comedy and the emotional weight of the frustrations explored.

Running at 65 minutes rather than the advertised 45 minute running time, it’s difficult to see what caused the additional 20 minutes, as from an audience perspective, the show seemingly flowed without a hitch and Cushen remained in control and confident on stage at all times. Would I recommend this funny, endearing show? Safe to say: I do.

Runs until 18th May 2026
